Abby Newton is a cellist of unusual versatility who has long been associated with two of Scotland's premier musicians - singer Jean Redpath and fiddler Alasdair Fraser. She is a mainstay of Jean's numerous recordings, and with Alasdair she has performed throughout the United States and in Scotland, as well as on her acclaimed album Crossing to Scotland. She also worked with Shetland fiddler Tom Anderson during the mid-70s.
Abby has composed and performed cello parts for over fifty recordings by a variety of folk artists including Priscilla Herdmann, Sally Rogers, Kate MacGarrigle and the Jay Ungar/Molly Mason duo. Abby for many years led cello classess at Alasdair Fraser's annual Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School.
On the classical side, she performs with the Olive Trio in her New York City home base and has been a member of many other chamber groups and symphony orchestras, as well as performing in several Broadway shows.
